I’d never heard of The Woman in Black until the final Harry Potter film came out and the previews of the upcoming dramatisation, starring Daniel Radcliffe, were aired. I really loved the quick trailer and decided to read the book before the film came out. I can say I absolutely love it. I’m guessing Susan Hill is a dog fanatic, or perhaps her writing is so good she blags it well. The supporting protagonist is an amazing dog, who I couldn’t help but fall in love with. The main protagonist is Arthur Kipps who is a rather likeable character. Like most people he’s sceptical and does not believe in the villagers’ nonsense about the house which he is visiting for a few days. As you can probably guess, there is a woman in black in the book, but other than telling you that Arthur discovered the truth about her, I’m going to say no more, after all, no one wants a review which spoils the story for them, well I certainly don’t. 5/5 for the wonderful classic; it’s wonderfully crafted and intriguing with some of the longest sentences ever published in the English language— I’m guessing.
